WHAT IS MYOPIA
In general, myopia is short-sightedness and can affect children. If you have noticed your child struggling to see clearly at a distance then Myopia could be the reason.
It is estimated 5 billion people, or half of the global population could be affected by short-sightedness by 2050.
Being able to have your child’s myopia diagnosed early not only corrects their vision now but can help slow the progression of myopia and preserve their vision and eye health for the future.
When progressive myopia occurs, you may experience:
- Blurred vision
- Eye strain
- Headaches
- Fatigue
These symptoms may generally occurs after looking at objects in the distance for an extended period of time.
Those with progressive myopia are also at a higher risk of developing eye health problems later in life such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration.
Because progressive myopia can have such a negative impact on a person’s eye health, it is important to get regular eye examinations that screen for these conditions.
Management of Myopia
During a routine comprehensive eye examination with a Qualified Optometrist, short sightedness can be detected. The options of management for this can be further discussed with the child’s parents.
In practice we address this as myopia management, which means we will discuss options to minimise the progression of myopia.
This could be done by using specialist contact lenses or glasses lenses designed to minimise myopia progression in children.

Essilor Stellest lenses
The Stellest spectacle lens from Essilor’s lens provides myopia correction and sharp vision through a single vision clear zone in the centre of the lens.
It provides myopia control through series of constellation of aspherical lenslets spread on 11 rings. The effect of this design is the slowing of the elongation of the eye in myopic children.
The power of each ring has been ingeniously determined to ensure light is focussed in front of the retina following the shape of the eye to achieve consistent myopia slowdown.
Spend time outdoors.
Research showed that spending time outdoors may reduce risk of myopia and its progression.
Seek regular eye care.
Make sure that your child has regular eye examinations to ensure that myopia or other vision problems are detected and treated early, reducing the worsening of vision, myopia progression and potential complications of high myopia.
Take regular breaks.
Reduce your child’s eye strain by reminding him or her to take breaks from intensive screen time or near-work.
